Many thanks to the organizers for putting together a very nice event and keeping the community alive McNeel Europe , Anomaly Build , ShapeDiver , Reope , Sweden design computing, Raven and to Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia for hosting the event! Special thanks to Pedro Cortes Nieves for the support and the pictures!
Topotheque Design Research Studio was invited to participate at the exhibition “WATER: The Major Challenge” which took place as part of Green Weekend 2026 at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC). As part of the exhibition, we presented a new iteration of Yfalos — a modular artificial reef system that brings together circular design, computational design, and digital fabrication to explore new approaches to the restoration of marine ecosystems.
Yfalos consists of prefabricated modular concrete elements that are parametrically designed and fabricated through a combination of digital manufacturing techniques — including 3D printing and CNC milling — and traditional casting methods. The modules can then be transported by small boats and deployed by divers, creating new habitats for threatened species while supporting biodiversity in degraded marine environments. The first Yfalos prototype was developed and fabricated at Fab Lab Ioannina and has already been deployed in the waters off Paxoi, Greece. The project explores how computational design and digital fabrication can extend beyond the built environment and contribute to the design of new, adaptable infrastructures for ecological restoration.
We have been testing on making some of our designs available via web configurators so that users can adjust speicfic design parameters as well as material thickness and generate the cutting paths
